Purpose of Role
The Motor Fuel and Sales Tax Analyst plays a crucial role in analyzing financial statements and other accounting records to accurately and timely report tax liabilities to the appropriate taxing
jurisdictions.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the accurate and timely preparation and filing of monthly, quarterly and annual
    tax returns including payment of and accounting for all related tax liabilities and maintenance of
    related tax records
  • Assist in preparation of monthly use tax accruals including review of invoices and legal research
    as needed to determine and calculate the proper accrual amounts
  • Team with other personnel to provide support on federal, state and local tax audits
  • Perform proactive tax research on purchase, sales and fixed asset data to verify the correct tax
    treatment including the applicability of any pertinent exemptions
  • Complete periodic reconciliation of tax accrual accounts
  • Work within the business across departments to help answer operating tax questions by researching
    and interpreting data
  • Assist in designing and implementing process improvements
  • Special projects as requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Typical Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Business 
  • 2-4 years experience working within an accounting or tax department preferred
  • Knowledge of federal excise tax, state fuels tax and state and local sales/use tax and other
    accounting concepts with experience in their application is a plus
  • Microsoft Office proficiency particularly in Excel
  • An ability to work in a stimulating environment with minimal supervision
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail while meeting internal and external deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience in the compilation of personal property tax returns
  • Experience in a high volume, low dollar value transaction environment
  • Ability to manage the day-to-day tax activities to be able to collaborate with peers, and other
    financial management as well as with the External and Internal Audit personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and define tax problems, evaluate alternatives, implement
    effective solutions

 

Environmental Requirements

  • Must maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of the assigned duties and responsibilities which may include, but are not limited to the following
    • This position requires working in an office setting, with long periods of time sitting
    • Must be able to stand, bend, push and pull at least up to 10 lbs
